SCENE: In the hallways of Montuok High School, ALICIA GREENE has interrupted the taunting of TIMOTHY MITCHELL by a group of jocks, among them MIKE, their leader and EVAN, a pudgy boy with whom Alicia had previously been involved.
MIKE AND THE BOYS
MIKE
Hey, “E!” What’s up? You need help over there? Again?
EVAN AND ALICIA
EVAN
Naw, it’s cool, Mike.
(To Alicia)
What’s with you and this Mitchell, anyway? The guy transfers in from who knows where and you fall all over him like he’s the sixth Backstreet Boy or something.
ALICIA
Not that I have to explain anything to you anymore, Evan, but he happens to be the most intelligent person I’ve ever met! Present company included.
MIKE AND THE BOYS
Mike is now standing by the boy whose foot Alicia trampled. He examines it briefly, then...
MIKE
Hey, Indigo Girl. I think you broke Willie’s foot.
ALICIA
Gee, and I’m just heartbroken about that, Mike.
MIKE
Come on, Willie. We’ll take you to the nurse.
Mike drapes Willie’s arm around his shoulder. Evan joins them.
MIKE
(To Alicia)
If he can’t play on Friday night because of you, Mitchell’s not gonna be the only one we see come Monday.
The four boys start off down the hallway.
ALICIA
Mike...
The boys stop. Mike turns to face Alicia.
ALICIA
(Mock sympathy)
Didn’t your mother ever breast feed you?
Mike gives Alicia a threatening look, then he and the other boys head off down the hallway.
